“If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.” – 1 Corinthians 13:3
No matter what we do in life, no matter our display of sacrifice, without love, it is worthless.
I can’t imagine giving everything I have to the poor, my house, my car, my savings account. Much less actually sacrificing my life. That is a sacrifice. That is the sacrifice. But if I did all that and did not love others it would be pointless, worthless, and tragic.
I am reminded of the one who sacrificed his body, his life. I abide in the truth that He loved us. Not only that but His actual sacrifice was made in the purest form of love itself. He loves us wholly, eternally, and unfailingly. Because He first loved us while fully knowing the final extent of each of our personal betrayals against Him, our outward denying of our relationship with Him, our seemingly endless moments of selfish sin. His love is so beautiful that He offered Himself up taking the punishment for our sins that we might spend eternity with Him. He suffered and died so that He could spend eternity with the very people who betray Him continually. He suffered and died so that He could spend eternity with the people who would publicly deny knowing Him. It’s a pain staking thought. The truth hits you deep in your gut. How could He love me, How could He love you… that much?
What kind of love is that? That sees past the betrayal and evens cast it as far as the east is from the west. What kind of love is that? That sets me as an heir to His throne. What kind of love is that? That calls me friend. What kind of love is that? That sees me holy as he his holy because He paid the price.
That love is the fire that burns in you. Yes, it lives in you. That love is accessible to you and for you. That love can flow out of you to the world around you.
In a world that is lost and afraid. In a world that is full of hate and quick to judge. You can stand apart. You can offer true love. A love that cast out fear. A love that forgives fully. A love that wipes away tears. A love that rescues. A love that delivers. A love that frees. A love that transforms.
The love that raises the dead to life.
That love is Jesus.
